Overview

The Q Group accepts 'natural person' members who possess a recognised tertiary degree with an emphasis in the use of quantitative methods, or an equivalent level of education relevant to finance or investments and who is willing to be an active participant.

Work Experience

Candidates will normally have completed at least one year's experience in either theoretical/empirical research or practical application of quantitative methods to problems in finance or investments.

Candidates must normally be nominated by a current financial member of the Q Group Australia who is prepared to vouch for the candidate's ability and willingness to be an active participant in the group's discussions.

Applicants who do not know a current member of the Q Group should include the name of an external referee on their application form. It is preferable that this referee not be employed by the same firm as the applicant.

The Membership Committee will assess all nominations and make a recommendation to the Q Group Committee.

Membership Fees

Once a person has successfully applied for full Q Group membership and paid the current year's fee, they will become a member.

Members are able to attend all seminars, the annual colloquium, the state-based Christmas dinner (Victoria and NSW) and the AGM at no charge or fee.

There are circumstances in which a membership can be put on hold for a period:

-The member moves overseas and expects to return at some future date
-The member leaves the industry and wishes to retain the option of becoming a financial Q Group member in the future

In these circumstances, the Membership subcommittee or Treasurer should be notified of a change of status. When the Member returns, he or she should notify the Membership subcommittee or Treasurer, pay the current fee and will become a financial member again.

If a member does not pay a yearly membership fee by due date notified by the Treasurer and has not provided any suitable explanation to the Q group Committee for an exemption, then his or her membership will be terminated immediately.

Commitment of Membership

Members are expected to contribute actively to the various activities of the Q Group such as attendance at seminars, attendance at annual colloquia, contribution to other Q Group activities such as various working parties, and making presentations from time to time.

Members not participating actively may not have their membership renewed.

Members can be nominated for election as a Committee member and vote in this election or on any other voting matters if and when they arise.

Student members are able to attend seminars and the colloquium, but they cannot vote.

Members are expected to contribute actively to the various activities of the Q Group such as attendance at seminars, attendance at annual colloquia, contribution to other Q Group activities such as various working parties, and making presentations from time to time. Members who do not participate actively may not be invited to renew their membership.

Student Membership

The Q Group has established a special membership for full-time students. Student membership of the Q Group will be open to full-time students enrolled at a recognised tertiary institution in a post-graduate (normally Masters or PhD) course of study that has a strong element of quantitative finance, or who are full-time 4th year honours candidates in an undergraduate program with a strong element of quantitative finance.

Interested students, who meet the above criteria, are invited to apply for Student membership of the Q Group, initially by emailing qmember@qgroup.org.au. They will need to be recommended by an existing Q Group member (there are members on many of the campuses).

Student members will not have full membership rights, but will be welcome at the Q Group's regular Sydney and Melbourne seminars and at its annual Sydney Colloquium. They will also have full access to the Q Group's web site and member's online discussion forum.

The annual fee for Student membership will be $50. Membership will be terminated at the end of the year following the ceasing of full-time studies. At that point they may choose to apply for full membership.
